Thomas Costa, assistant secretary of Unions NSW, has been appointed to the State Super (SAS Trustee Corporation) Board.

According to State Super chairperson Nicholas Johnson, the union executive would “add to a depth of knowledge on the Board”, given his long involvement in the union movement.

As assistant secretary at Unions NSW, Costa’s responsibilities included managing the union’s research and industrial strategy and its communications and digital team.

He was also responsible for the coordination of Unions NSW’s Visa Assist Project in partnership with the Immigration Advice and Rights Centre (IARC) to represent and advocate for migrants and provides free immigration legal support and advice to migrants who were union members.

Costa had previously worked as an industrial officer and lawyer with the national offices of the Australian Rail, Tram and Bus Industry Union and the Australian Workers’ Union, and as a solicitor for Slater & Gordon Lawyers and the HIV Aids Legal Centre (HALC).

“We are pleased to welcome Thomas to the board. I have no doubt that he has a very strong cultural alignment with State Super. His dedication to grow and protect the long-term financial wellbeing of workers will be valued, and we look forward to working with him,” added John Livanas, State Super chief executive.

Costa commenced his four-year term on the super fund board in February 2023.

State Super managed superannuation and pension schemes for over 90,000 past and present NSW government and public sector employees, with assets totalling $38 billion as at 30 June 2022.
