MetLife chief executive Marc Lieberman has been appointed to the board of the Financial Services Council (FSC).

Lieberman has held senior positions in the life industry in New Zealand, Europe and North America, including chief executive of Hartford Life and ING New Zealand.

FSC chairman Peter Maher said Lieberman had joined the council at an important time.

"Marc joins the FSC board at a significant crossroads for financial services in Australia as it moves from a heavy focus on regulatory change to a time of innovation and the development of new market opportunities," he said.

As a substantial proportion of Australians move to retirement, innovations in retirement products are expected.

Lieberman has joined chief executive and chief investment officer of Australian Unity Investments, David Bryant; managing director of Equity Trustees, Robin Burns; chief executive of BT Financial Group, Brad Cooper; managing director of Vanguard Investments, John James; the chief executive of Suncorp Life, Geoff Sumerhayes and a number of other industry executives who constitute the FSC board.

"We welcome the breadth and depth of local and international experience that Marc brings to the FSC board," Maher said.
