Incoming Law Society of NSW president Ros Everett has been appointed to the board of legalsuper as director.

Everett is a founding principal in law firm Evan Everett and current senior vice president of the Law Society of NSW, one of five legalsuper stakeholders with a membership of more than 23,000. She will step into the society’s top leadership position at the end of the year.

Everett has significant law experience and reach into the industry and also represents the Women Lawyers Association of NSW as one of over 9000 women lawyer members.

David Miles, the industry fund’s chairman, said the appointment carried on a tradition of appointing from within legalsuper’s cohort of stakeholders to maintain the fund’s close ties to the legal profession. Legal professionals had a deep understanding of the fiduciary responsibilities of directors and have hands-on knowledge and understanding of legal professionals’ superannuation, according to Miles.

“In the new MySuper landscape, funds like legalsuper that have a clearly defined market have deeper insight into the expectations of that niche market,” he said.

“In this new world, the specialist funds will stand apart from the pack, growing brand loyalty with high levels of personal service and tailored solutions.”

Bringing in new faces was an integral part of the $2 billion fund’s governance structure, he said.

“It also means that four of 10 (or 40 per cent) directors are female, above the industry average of 21 per cent and already reaching the industry target of 40 per cent by 2017 as set by the Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees,”  he said.
