Former Actuaries Institute president and current TAL Life chief actuary Fred Rowley has been appointed president-elect of the International Actuarial Association (IAA), only the second Australian to ever be elected to the position.

Elected in Singapore on 13 October by delegates of the IAA’s 64 full-member associations, Rowley will take up his new role from 1 January 2014 and is expected to become president of the worldwide association of professional actuarial associations in 2015.

He has been an active member of the Actuaries Institute for more than 15 years, providing thought leadership in risk management with an emphasis on financial risks and corporate finance.

“Fred takes it upon himself to do his utmost to advance the actuarial profession across the board, and his election as president-elect of the IAA recognises this,” Actuaries Institute president John Newman said.

Rowley said it is important for actuarial professionals to continually renew their skillsets in order to maintain the value of the services they provide.

“The financial world continues to evolve rapidly, and the momentum towards common standards for risk and capital management, as well as for financial reporting, is accelerating,” he said.

“As president-elect, one of my key goals for the year ahead will be to ensure that the actuarial profession is fully engaged with the right bodies around the world, and that its role and contribution are fully recognised in the international domain.”
