The Future Fund reported a return of 14.3 per cent for the 2013/14 financial year, up from the initially reported provisional report of 13.9 per cent.

The fund's first quarter value for 2014/15 stood at $104.5 billion at 30 September 2014, which is a 2.9 per cent return, and up from $101.6 billion from 30 June 2014.

Managing director David Neal said the fund was meeting or surpassing return targets over all periods since the fund began.

"As such our objective is for the portfolio to achieve good returns when markets are strong while benefiting from some protection during weaker periods," he said.

"Globally, policy makers are seeking to balance the challenge of moving towards more normal policy settings while maintaining efforts to encourage economic growth. This continues to present both risks and opportunities for investors," Neal said.

The fund warned, however, recent strong returns are not sustainable as growth and prospective returns are low.

It said policy makers are moving towards more "normal" policy settings as they look to stimulate growth.
